The "ASB Gambia" is an independent humanitarian NGO in The Gambia, founded in 2001.
More than 36,000 patients are seen every year by over 40 local staff and two German managers. Besides HIV / AIDS, malaria is one of the major health problems facing the hospital every day, especially in the rainy season. The Malaria patients are catered for for by laboratory tests and the necessary medicines. Since Gambia is located in the sub-Saharan malaria-endemic area, the annual number of malaria cases is very high.
The clinic has its own surgical area, a dressing room, an in-house pharmacy, nine inpatient beds and a maternity ward. In addition, the hospital offers a prenatal care, a vaccination program and the TEETH project.

The hospital staff are particularly proud of the FACE project. Dr. Lei Li (head of the Department of Oral and maxillofacial surgery and plastic surgery in Oldenburg) and Dr. Joachim Siegert (oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Gifhorn), together with several colleagues, operate on patients of all ages which are in urgent need of surgery. These operations comprise mainly of procedures for jaw, palate and various facial tumors and joint deformities. People with deformities and tumors on the face are demonised in African society and must eke out a living on the margins of society. Some simple operations can achieve great success and help patients return to a dignified life. This is possible thanks to the German medical team, without which the operations in the Gambia would not be feasible. Over 200 operations have already been performed to date, and the operations are performed free of charge to children.
To continue to provide this service, the clinic is in need of charitable donations. The annual funding deficit amounts to about 30,000 Euros. At an annual average of 36,000 patients, this sum corresponds to about 1 Euro per patient.
